Yeats The Super Dog

On October 2, 1994 God gave me a dog to be by my side and protect me while I grew up. When he came into my life, we decided to name him ‘Yeats’, after the Irish poet.

Yeats stood by my side as I grew up and worked my way through the various stages of a growing boy. He always was there right by my side, like a good dog should be.

God blesses us with certain people in our lives that impact us in a way that changes who we are: one of those people was my dog, Yeats.

I could never thank him enough for being there for me the last 14 years. Last night I saw him for the final time, a withered disfigurement of the dog I used to hunt, swim, run, rollerblade and play with. I won’t keep his physical atrophy as his last memory with me but rather all the good times he brought to my heart throughout the years that I was blessed to have his presence.

This is to you Yeats – You’re the best dog a boy could ever have. Good dog.

It is not until a dog gets old that his most important virtues ripen and coalesce. Old dogs can be cloudy-eyed and grouchy, gray of muzzle, graceless of gait, odd of habit, hard of hearing, wheezy and lazy. But to anyone who has ever known an old dog these flaws are of little consequence. Old dogs are vulnerable. They show exorbitant gratitude and limitless trust. They are without artifice. They are funny in new and unexpected ways. But, above all , they seem at peace. In our dogs ,we see ourselves. They wear their emotions nakedly, and so, in watching them, we see ourselves as we would be if we were stripped of posture and pretense. When we watch a dog progress from puppyhood to old age, we are watching our own lives in microcosm. Our dogs become old, frail, crotchety and vulerable, just as we surely will, come the day.

I had a cat named Snowball
    She died! She died!
    Mom said she was sleeping
    She lied! She lied!
Why oh why is my cat dead?
Couldn’t that Chrysler hit me instead?
